free old bread at Tempe Farmers Market

I pick up old produce for composting at the new-ish Tempe Farmers Market (480.557.9970) at the SE corner of Farmer and University. I'm also picking up a lot of old bread, which they are generating especially quickly due to the hot weather. The bread is getting to be too voluminous for my bins, and it's a finished product probably better used for something like chicken feed anyway. The market is probably generating 5-10 bags of various breads and rolls each day. All of it can probably be dried in the sun for later use.

If any of you "chicken folks" are interested in picking up some as a feed supplement, just give the market a call to make sure it's available or so maybe they can reserve some for ya.

Happy feeding!

  • Hey there rabbit people, I have read that rabbits LOVE bread!

Novella Carpenter who wrote "Farm City, the education of an urban farmer" would dumpster dive bread for her bunnies.

BTW, that is a great book!

  • Here we are 8 months later, and the Farmers Market is still trying to find homes for all its day-old, unsellable bread. I take what I can for composting, but there is always a large pile by the front door every time I go in, and they tell me they throw away the pile and start over every so often. So, if you're looking for fresh or to-be-dried bread for chicken feed, composting, etc., please contact the market.

    Thanks!
