chickens cackling a lot but no eggs

We are down to two chickens (having moved the roosters on). Each morning there is a great deal of clucking, goes on for maybe 20-30 minutes but no eggs. They were born in mid-August. Do you think they are not getting enough light and maybe I should rig up a lamp out there or is clucking a precursor for egg laying and I should continue to be patient. They appear to be in good spirits, play in the yard during their free time, eat, drink, generally chicky-merry.

Thanks! Happy New Year

  • I am not an expert but I think this cold snap has slowed my girls laying down. Maybe a few warmer days and you can "eggs"pect more than cackling. blessings!

  • Are their combs bright red?  Do they squat when you approach?

These are both signs that they are ready to lay any day.
