Finally! After not laying since late March, our now year old leghorn hen, Cindy, has begun laying eggs again. We have 3 different types of chickens, hers are distinctive looking (large and sort of peachy colored). Yay! We just ignored that she wasn't laying, brought her out of the nest every day. About a month ago her crop & wattle became red again--they'd been this sort of anemic looking pink. Soooo glad she was not sent to freezer camp!

I think you are the same Jeanette that had to give your rooster up. Am I right? I was having problems with mine, and I was trying everything to try to keep him, but in the end, I had to let him go.
I too was dealing with a hen that has been in her nesting box for over 2 1/2 months. Every day, I would take her out and make her walk around when I let my other chickens out. I was really wondering if she would ever start coming out on her own. And right after I read your good news, mine started coming out too! Amazing! I think that makes us chicken sisters! :-) Have a good one, Linda

Yes. That was me (and a dozen others) who had a rooster. Marianne was a beautiful roo. I work two jobs to keep these girls in tomatoes and grapes and have not had a chance to take new pix. Will try real soon. They probably are some sort of mix.
Oh, I could be completely wrong about the breed of chicken. She's big and white with the bright red crop & wattle, very sweet. I will take a picture of her tomorrow. Maybe I'll get the red heads we added during December as well. I have no idea what they are.. they were 4 months when I got them..
Wow, her eggs don't sound like a leghorn and neither do her broodiness. But it sounds like her comb and physical appearance are leghorn. Wonder if she's crossed with something else?
I was thinking the same thing, Tracy. Pictures might give us a clue. Jeanette, is she skinny? Leghorns are egg laying machines, not meat birds, so they tend to be rather thin.
I'm a little confused about 1. a leghorn sitting-- especially for four months and 2. Peach-colored eggs from her. Would you mind posting a picture of her?

I'm glad she's laying for you now!
