Backyard coops is the best site. You can browse thru scads of designs and get some great clues as to what does and does not work for others. One of the best notes I saw highly recommends investing in a $10-20 roll of laminate flooring to line the bottom to make scooping poop and bedding out of the nests, enclosures etc. I've even seen a few that put down a laminate wood flooring but that may be overkill unless you are looking to win some award.
I gathered tons of designs so I can pull the parts that work for others and then come up with my own exterior "style" to make my own funky coop!
It is, indeed a banana tree. My husband dug up an emerging shoot from the foreclosure behind us last fall. The tree behind the coop is a fig and provides much needed shade, as well as insulation from the extreme heat in the summertime. The coop is constructed from bamboo culms harvested from our neighbor's bamboo stand, also pictured in the background. The roof is Washington palm fronds from our neighbor across the street. The chickens are quite content.
