Bantam Rooster inside the house?

Hi everyone,

I have a few chicks that are about 8 weeks old and 2 of the Japanese bantams turned out to be roosters.  One of them started to crow yesterday and I cannot have him in my backyard.  I was wondering if I could keep him inside a cage inside the house and what everyones thoughts are on that?

I have 7 chickens and they are loud enough for the neighbors, so I'm trying to be a good neighbor, but also a good papa to my baby chicks.

  • Well you know the whole chicken in a cage in the house thing is not acceptable, for your health or the humane treatment of the chickens. However, try letting them crow, and ask your neighbors how they feel about it. I ended up with an unexpected rooster 3 yr ago and my neighbors love to wake up to him in the morning. If he doesnt crow a day, they are asking me "what happened to the rooster?" They are adamant that I keep him!
    • that is so cool.  I like your neighbors already.  That is a great tip.  Thanks
    • Not if you raise them as pets since they were 3 days old though.
  • I know a couple people who bring them in for the night and re-pen them after crowing time in the morning.  Depends on if they crow on a schedule or not.
    • that's what I was thinking of doing.  I don't think that they are that annoying during the day.  It is just the morning that's my concern.
  • Pratt's Pets will buy them off of you for $5 each.
    • what if they get to full grown size? how much then?

  • By the way, they will both crow.
  • The Mesa Feed Barn will take roosters or any chickens you can't care for, but you don't know who will buy him. You could look for a home in an area of town that will allow them. We have 2 and that's enough for us but there are plenty of areas that do allow them.
    • I really want to keep them.  I just wanted to know if anyone has every kept them in cages inside the house.
