I have two roosters and I can't keep them. Would anyone like to trade a couple of hens for these roosters? One is a white leghorn and the other is an easter egger. The picture is from about a month and a half ago. The white one is dominant, crowing in the morning. I unfortunately live in Mesa, and they don't allow roosters!Let me know if you are interested or have any questions.Patrick

With sadness, this morning, I returned Jones. This is the second trip back to the store ... the first time, they convinced me that Jones was a she.. and I took her/him home again. They were the ones who checked the vent, not a vet.
Even if a she, the crowing is not something I am willing to force onto my neighbors (who know about the chickens and have not complained). So, since the volume increased, I've brought Jones into the house at night, in a cage, which is rotten for my sleep.
For estimating how long until laying, do I check the bones just underneath the vent? if so, the Leghorns have only one fingerbreath and the Barred Rock has 1 1/2... on Friday, they will be 20 weeks.
I am interested in the vent check, if only for future events.

Jones' (19 week old Plymouth Barred Rock)crow has continued to develop in amplitutde and quantity.... and now he/she has started mounting/male sexual activity!
I also have a loud chicken I would like to get rid of , she/ he is very noisy even after eating and sometime gets noisier after spraying water. She / He is a Silky and kinda fun looking...we are near the sunburst farm area if anyone wants it.
FYI, Jones is back to her dominating behavior and no longer acts sickly. she did not like being separated from the others. thanks for the website, it had lots of good info... I also referred to the Chicken Health Handbook, available in the Phoenix Library. And thanks for the help with the gender issues.
Jones/Jonie .... gradually, since the trip to the feed store has become more subdued. she rarely tries to dominate the other chickens. she still looks as pretty as ever, but sits around, and is losing feathers and weight (she is able to squeeze behind a pole that she could not manage a week ago). I don't see any mites or unusual looking poop.
I am thinking stress or disease... and wonder if you have insight to offer.

thank you both for helping my peace of mind. I agree that she is pretty and they (chickens) are amazingly entertaining. as for spurs, I've attached a photo of her legs; there are little nubs.
Looks like a girl to me too. For basically the reasons that Chris states. I'm not 100% sure but I'm pretty certain. I went out and looked at my barred rock hen and her comb and wattles are just as big. At 15 weeks, you should only have to wait another month or so for an egg to confirm!
Jones is 15 weeks old and the folks at Gordon's feed store said she looks and sounds like a hen. they did not do a physical exam. Attached are 6 photos. the comparison photo is to show what the other Barred Rock looks like, who is exactly the same age. The chickens have an automatic feeder and watering dish inside their pen 24/7.
