I woke up Sunday AM to 1 little yellow ball of fluff greeting me with another one on the way. As of this AM when I left for work we were at 25 hatched, one started and 27 eggs left to go. Not too bad all things taken into account, so with that, after Kristin gets her 4 little white guys,

yes- that is always tough...you don't want to sell them all they are far too cute! Once I established a base group of 4-6 hens and 1 roo, I kept two of each of the last hatch. Then I culled some, and I'm looking to build back up. It's a fun roller coaster and I'm sure you'll change your mind a few times before all is said and done.
I'm not sure if I ever asked...what is the color and/or colors expected from the next batch of 120 eggs? and do you plan to breed for color in the future?
Oh that's right.. I didn't tell you on the eggs what we were getting did I? Hee hee.. I may make you wait until this weekend to spill the beans :)
We have 3 more hatched. Total of 36 so far with 2 more started on the final arrival into the warm world. Not too shabby :)
I was thinking about breeding true on colors. In all the animals I've raised from chickens and pigeons to horses and cattle, we always bred pure (with the exception of 1 market steer). Figure I'll have more than enough room, might as well :)
I am super excited!congrats on the great hatch numbers! can't wait to see the little fluffballs! they look so cute when they start to feather out and their bodies have little white feathers but their heads are still yellow fluff :)
I'm sure you'll have people excited to get some little ones soon! how many are you keeping for your own quail stock? any?
Ah, there in lays the problem. Im not sure how many I want to keep. The youngest from your hatch haven't started singing yet, but don't need to keep a bunch of males. So I may keep just 12 from this clutch to grow up and see what we get. With the other 120 eggs coming, no reason to keep too many just yet.
Some of these little guys are really cute with a dark spot on the tops of their heads. Maybe I'll just keep the dark tops :)
