We had a similar experience. We adopted 4 hens and have had them about a month now. Pretty sure only 2 are laying and mostly consistent with 1-2 eggs a day. Sunday the littlest one (bottom of the peck order too!) laid her first egg for us. Now, just one more hen to lay and we have all 4.
I can't say what caused her to lay, because Saturday we enlarged the coop and then that night the rain kicked in. Either she was pleased with the extra room or the rain made her nervous. Maybe a combination!
Who knew chickens were so exciting? Suddenly the oft repeated phrase from Jane Austen's books about a country women being kept happy by her poultry makes sense!
