When do I switch chicken feed?

I have four chickens. Two are about 4 1/2 months old and two are about 3 1/2 months old. I am still using starter feed because I haven't made it through an entire bag yet. When do I change food for better egg production? What else do I need to do to encourage better eggs?I'm new to this...Thanks!

  • I see you posted this several weeks ago and you now have 4-5 month olds, they should begin laying very soon, if you still have starter feed go ahead and give them that until it runs out or they start laying, which ever comes first. You can still mix it in with the lay pellets if you have some leftover so you can use it all up. I would offer them oyster shell for additional calcium if they need it if you do this.
  • They say your chickens start laying at 6 mo, and at that time you should change to layer feed.
    Hope this helps :o)
