Hi fellow Micro Livestock lovers-The Phoenix Permaculture Guild is putting out a call for help with our first annual Tour de Coops! This is a great opportunity to learn a lot more about keeping backyard poultry and see first hand how others are keeping chickens, ducks, quail, etc at home. We are looking for both volunteers who would like to serve on an organizing committee, as well as submission entries (these can be either your coop or someone else's that you would love to see). Please let me know if you would like to attend our kick-off meeting (date TBD, depending on everyone's availability). We have a target date for the Tour of Dec. 5th. There will be submission entry forms posted soon for those interested in being a host site. Please email me directly: liz@phoenixpermaculture.netThanks all,Liz LonettiExecutive DirectorPhoenix Permaculture Guild

  • Folks : Reminder : Our next planning meeting is this Saturday 08-22 at Drip Coffee Lounge in Phoenix -- 2pm. Our last meeting was really fantastic; hope to see you there!

    • Tenacity, yes, yes...we'll have meeting #1 for 2010 tour de coops mid to late July. This will be the set-up meeting and you can see what's needed and contribute to this event; time and place will be posted on the PPG website. This event will actually has some specific volunteer training that will happen in November, so in the mean time, have fun as a volunteer. There's lots of opportunities. Oh, I'm Vicki, am on the PPG board and am heading up this event. My technical web-skills are kinda weak (i'm working on it) and the exec director Liz, gave me the heads-up of your interest. Thank you!
    • Hi Tenacity,

The Tour de Coops Committee hasn't started meeting again yet to plan this year's event in December, but I'm sure you'll be welcome to join in! If your interested in helping out in other ways, I'd ask you to consider attending one of the Volunteer Orientations, there should be another in a month or two. At the orientation you will learn about the different Committees and groups of volunteers that make up the Guild and where your talents can best be put to use! There is a need for help with the Tour de Coops, the Sustainable Home Tour Committee, and always the Guild's Booth at the Downtown Phoenix Public Market.

  • Hola folks!

The inaugural Tour de Coops committee meeting was a huge success, with eight incredibly awesome volunteers dedicating their time to making this event rock! The next Tour de Coops committee meeting will be 08-22-02009 at 2pm, at Drip Coffee Lounge. Those who didn't make it to the last meeting are doubly encouraged to check out this next one. The Tour de Coops is going to be mega, and we can sure use all the smart folks we can get!
  • the ducks want to be a part of the event!! count on us
  • Hi All -
Thanks for your patience - we now have an awesome dedicated volunteer who is going to be heading up the Tour de Coops Committee. We ran the following paragraph in our weekly newsletter:

"Do you like urban chickens and meeting cool people? If so, you'll love Tour De Coops, a fun and informative self-guided tour of the hippest urban chicken (and other poultry) setups in Phoenix! Scheduled for December, it's going to be one of the niftiest events of the year. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about urban chicken raising, see amazing coops & cute chickens, and talk with the creative people in the Phoenix urban chicken / sustainability community!

We're in the planning stage right now and are looking for clever folks who can help us make it the best tour of its kind -- if this sounds like you, please show up to the inaugural Tour de Coops committee meeting, scheduled for 2pm on Saturday August 8th at Drip Coffee Lounge. Please RSVP on our website if you are planning on attending (this event will be posted on our website this week). If you can't make it, but have (or know of) a coop you'd like to see on the tour, please email us (liz@phoenixpermaculture.org). Hope to see you there!"

We'll have the event posted soon so you can RSVP and we'll also create a new group to help organize all the ideas that we'll generate in the process. So please come and meet Nicholas, the Committee Chairman, and get involved with this historic event - the first of it's kind in the valley!
