  • Hi Linda - I do remember you from class, how is everything? I am still at SWIHA doing the massage program and have clinic most saturdays so I haven't made it to the market lately. I too would love to take some of the classes they offer. Im glad you contacted me hopefully I will see you at the market some time or a class. Jenn
  • Hi Jim,

I wish it was my horse....the horse is actually from my friends farm. I live in a urban setting in Peoria, not to far from you. I am using everything exempt the horse manure for my compost & bought the biodynamic mixture per your suggestion, so I am waiting for a BIG batch of compost to cook! Can't wait & hope it comes out just like yours! That was some of the most sweetest smelling compost I have ever smelled and it reminds me of the dirt back home - I could just stick my face in it! Anyway, I have to get more containers, because I am accumulating more matter to compost:)

Thanks for the tip on beneficial critters. I was looking everywhere for them a few months back, because I was having a problem with bad bugs eating my veggies. I had started to dust my garden with diatomaceous earth and noticed that I had 1 praying mantis eating a bug. He was absolutely beautiful! Sounds kinda goofy, buy now I always go out to my garden to say hello to him.....he is the only one I have to my knowledge.

I will certainly keep in touch with you. Thank you for sharing your expertise and if I can ever be of any help to you, let me know. :) Linda
  • Hi Linda,

What method of composting are you using? Do you have a supply of dired leaves & plants (carbon source) , and green grass or fresh garden waste(nitrigen source)- you need both to make compost. Your horse will provide manure (notrogen) for your compost.

Arbico in Tucson sells beneficial critters including praying mantis. Let meknow if there;s anything I can do to help you with your composting efforts!

  • squish those bugs with your hands, that will show them!
On a diferent note, I am inviting folks to my place in show low for the fourth, to help me with my small garden.
so if you need to get out of the heat, and help me squish bugs, come on up!

  • Hi Linda, I've got your preserves. Call me and we'll work out a plan to get them to you.
  • Dear Erika,

I'm not sure what they are....could be aphids or mites of some sort, but they are laying eggs & feasting on my collard greens like crazy. I wanted to buy lady bugs (have a few, but not enough) or praying mantis, but couldn't find anything local to purchase.

Do you know where to purchase locally?
  • Hey Linda, what kind of bugs are in your garden? I have found most bugs are really harmless, and predator type bugs if given the right homes will be your best warriors against the bad ones.

We had aphids like crazy in our garden. Everywhere! then, just as I was starting to worry, lady bugs showed up and within a week all was back in balance. Currently we have a lot of "seed bugs" running around. Back in the mid-west we called them box elder bugs and they are black and red. They are harmless and feed on all kinds of seeds, specially weed seeds!
