  • Our girls are spending most of the day in front of their AC unit. At first, (for about a day) they didn't really like the "change" or "something different".  They are so hard headed! We enticed them with live meal worms from WalMart- our usual bribe to change behavior.  I am glad it helped you.  Lowe's has a really small window unit....

Rachel replied to Jan Carlson's discussion Suggestions for hen with hurt toe in Micro Livestock
"I would do what Carrie suggests. I had this happen to a hen once several years ago (the nail did grow back in this case). Ideally, wash it as soon as you notice it and put a little iodine or something on it (don't use any antibiotic lotion with…"

Jan Carlson replied to Jan Carlson's discussion Suggestions for hen with hurt toe in Micro Livestock
"Thank you so much for responding and for your sympathies. I will follow through with the treatment suggested for Betdtine, antibiotic ointment, and bandage. We did suspect that the nail probably would not grow back :(  We don't mind that so much, we…"

Carrie replied to Jan Carlson's discussion Suggestions for hen with hurt toe in Micro Livestock
"Hi Jan,
Sorry about your girl's toe. I had this happen to two of mine over the last couple years and each time I cleaned it up with Betadine solution & put antibiotic ointment on it and a flexible fabric band aid with the open end sealed shut and…"

Angie Chandler replied to Jan Carlson's discussion Suggestions for hen with hurt toe in Micro Livestock
"What bummer!! Poor little girl. Finger cots-finger bandages may work best if a band-aid is required.   Here are some animal medical websites I found:http://www.organicvet.co.uk/Poultryweb/Home.htm
(quick & easy…"

Hi all, I just discovered one of my hens has a hurt toe. It happened sometime this afternoon, and is not bleeding any longer. On close examination, the toenail, and possibly a small part of the toe itself, is missing! We were able to notice it…

Jan Carlson replied to Jan Carlson's discussion Questions re: chickens in this heat in Micro Livestock
"Excellent idea. I'll get some of those going, too. I think I'll need a bigger freezer just for all the bottles they'll need. :)

Jeffrey L Dyer replied to Jan Carlson's discussion Questions re: chickens in this heat in Micro Livestock
"I fill 2 liter bottles full of water and put them in the deep freeze.  Once the temp goes over 100, I put those bottles in the places where the chickens hide from the sun.  They snuggle up next to the bottles to keep cool.  I also put them in the…"

"Thank you so much for your information! I immediately looked up online about tent ac units and have already built one for our girls. Of course, they are shunning it right now, but it will be a great help tonight in their coop when they are on the…"

Jan Carlson replied to Jan Carlson's discussion Questions re: chickens in this heat in Micro Livestock
"Thanks so much everyone for your replies. I have read, with sadness, the chickens that have died recently. That's the biggest reason I wanted to make sure I was doing all I could.

I will definitely put the frozen water bottle in a saucer for them,…"

Rachel replied to Jan Carlson's discussion Questions re: chickens in this heat in Micro Livestock
"Sounds like you're doing great, and they have lots of choices. Animals are usually pretty good about finding the most ideal microclimates. One other thing you can do is to take a frozen water bottle (lid off) and put it in an empty pot saucer. They…"

Catherine, The Herb Lady replied to Jan Carlson's discussion Questions re: chickens in this heat in Micro Livestock
"Hi Jan,

If you have perches in the outside run under some kind of a canopy/cover/roof (with open sides for air circulation) they may choose to perch there. Left to their own devices Chickens would roost in trees or shrubs.  You can use a dog…"

Jeanette replied to Jan Carlson's discussion Questions re: chickens in this heat in Micro Livestock
"Mine also don't like the mister. I have 4 in a coop while I am at work. They get an hour or so yard time in the morning and then maybe 2 early evening, longer mornings on the weekends. (We have to keep the dogs in when they are out.) They like being…"

Sheri Schmeckpeper replied to Jan Carlson's discussion Questions re: chickens in this heat in Micro Livestock
"It sounds like you're doing OK. This time of year they all pant a lot, and they'll hang out in the coolest place they can find. Ours spend their day under a boat where it's shady and there's a bit of air that blows through most of the time. They're…"

This is my first summer with my 5 beautiful hens. So far so good, but I'd like some help deciding what to do for keeping them as cool as possible. I've read many things, and I don't know what to believe since some of it conflicts. I know this forum…

I can't wait for it to warm back up again."
