Has anyone in the area converted a swimming pool to a cistern - instead of just filling it with dirt?
I'm working on a conversion myself and wonder if there is some experience in this group that I could tap into.
Here's my schematic...

OK. I'm finally moving along on the project. As I mentioned, it took quite a while to get a delivery of rock. Even then, it was not what I expected - but as I go along, it seems to be exactly what I needed! (the universe provides.)
Here's a sequence of pictures.
Above is the pool with the cool decking broken up and laid in the bottom with as much void space as I could manage. It pretty much filled the diving deep.
Here's the contractor breaking off the upper 24 inches.
The last section bit of rim to go. Now we have to cut all the rebar off.
Here's the delivery of rock - 4 loads of 20 tons. A daunting task - they were supposed to be 6" to 12" with 1% larger pieces. (I think the 1% was by count not by weight or volume.) :( But it turned out the big rocks worked well.
Here we are, part way through moving the rocks into the pool. As can be seen the big rocks were placed along the left side - the side close to the house. (I had to dolly those one at a time.) The weight of the rocks will provide more stability I ever want to pour a patio pad over it. The PVC pipe sticking up is my backup pump pipe, if the pool drain clogs. It goes down to about 2 feet from the very bottom. The round, white cover at the center bottom of the picture is the drain pipe, covered. I bought a standard pitcher pump and plan to extend the pipe and mount the pump on a stand.
So here's a pic after a couple weeks of work moving and leveling the rock. More to go, though. A layer of 3" rock is needed followed by layer of 3/4" gravel. Then the filter cloth and soil.
Here's the current remains of the rock piles. I definitely had too much delivered. Per my calculations, I needed 92 cu yds. I bought approximately 80 tons of rock - about 65 cu yds. But sorting it by size left a lot of voids and that increased the volume - and that is a good thing. So my girlfriend has been picking out some nice landscaping stones, the neighbors are selecting a few and I will advertise it on Craigslist - first load is free, second load is only half price!
Got my demo permit on Friday, so my deadline is 60 days to finish.
Saturday morning, a contractor removed the top 24 inches of the pool with a bob cat and a jackhammer. I'm arranging the rubble to maximize the gaps and testing the drain flow. More in a week or so.
I'm still waiting for a delivery of rock. There is a pipeline going in somewhere in the desert and everyone is busy. I keep getting put off, day by day.
Looks good, & we are very interested to hear what people have to say - we have often considered doing the same thing but have never drawn it up!
