  • :( :( :( I was just catching up on Permaculture Guild news and saw your class posted. We have guests coming for dinner that night and I really wanted to take this class with you next time. When will you be offering this again? I do a lot of container gardening with varied results so would really like to get a handle on it.
  • Thank you, I will. I just finished watering my whole garden by hand with vinegar water.
  • Sorry, I just found Chris old entry of testing soil.
  • I have purchased the electronic pH level kits at the hardware store and they do not seem to work. Can you tell me how you have tested your pH? Thank you.
  • i just got a hand held ph/fertilizer meter at home depot for the price of a pool test kit. i tested my water and my soil and it works great. it comes with a chart that recommends ph for different plants, they even knocked off a couple bucks because the package was open. no more test strips for me.
    • Marion,

I purchased one of these hand held meters a year or so ago and also take it shopping with me when I'm picking up compost or potting soil. There are small drain holes in the plastic bags and I just choose a bag that I can tell is moist and stick it in through the hole as far as it will go and I can tell right away what I'll be adding to my garden/pots PH wise. I love this gadget.
    • That's a great idea. Thanks I will include my meter on my next trip.
  • This is very helpful, it gives me a better idea of the proportions. I will apply periodically as needed depending on the results. Thank you much again!
  • Chris, in what proportion do you mix the vinegar solution with water to get started? I could not spot that piece of information.

I started using coffee grinds and my pH went down a bit already. Mostly, it is earth worms fest, they are wiggling all over the place lol!! I still have areas where the meter hits the top of the chart in a split second.

    Thanks!
  • Chris, what is a good way to test the soil PH? I've seen those little kits in the hardware stores, but haven't tried one yet. Do they work? or is there another method?
