Mint, Anyone?

I'd like to take advantage of the evaporative drip of my air conditioner by building a small, raised bed under it and planting something like mint. Does anyone have any experience with particular types (spearmint, peppermint)in this area? Or even know where to go to get plants or cuttings? I think I can buy spearmint seeds at the store.

  • Baker nursery always had the most varieties of mint - spearmint, peppermint, pineapple mint, chocolate, etc, etc
    • Thanks, Peggy! I actually found some spearmint ("Sweet Mint") in the herb starter sets at Home Depot. I built my bed and planted it, along with sweet basil and Greek thyme. Now I have to figure out how to reduce the sunlight a bit! I think I'll be building a small, low awning.
    • Mint likes a little shade, but not so at all with basil and thyme - they like full sun - and your basil, unless put in a greenhouse or indoors, will not make it through the winter.  Basil likes hot and sunny.  Thyme can withstand both summer and winter temps, but does need full sun to thrive.
    • Ah - thanks. I was perhaps misinformed.
