  • This is really late, but I'm just getting a chance to get back on line. If you get around to planting one, let me know. Then we can compare notes. I planted one in November (it's about 3 feet tall and pretty spindly) and, so far, it's managed to survive our chilly winter. (I got it and my mango at the strange little nursery on Southern and 32nd Street.)

Oh and there's a rare fruit growers group here in town.

  • Try contacting the Arizona Chapter of the California Rare Fruit Growers. Not sure who is the main contact now, it's been a few years since I was involved. Their meetings are held at the Cooperative Extension office off Broadway and 43rd St. There are a number of subtropical/tropical fruit growers in the valley. Steve Flowers at Tropica Mango Nursery among many others are growing a number of different varieties of avocado. Also, the website deserttropicals has information posted. Good luck.
    • Thanks so much for the information - I'll see what I can find out!
    • anytime. let me know if you need help. if you go to the extension office you will see the subtropical demonstration garden we built awhile ago. try googling the arizona chapter. the California Rare Fruit Growers is also a great resource. Julie or Julia Morton also has a great book on subtropicals too. I donated a bunch of books to the Scottsdale library and to the AZCRFG and they are held at the office. If you are a Master Gardener you can borrow them. Get a hold of Richard Gross, he was our first member when my dad and I started the club in the 90's and is a subtropical genius.
  • I remember way back as a kid, putting toothpicks in avocado seeds and resting them in a glass of water till roots started to grow from the bottom. I also remember never actually planting one, because everyone said it takes something like 7 years before they will bear fruit! Oh my, how many 7-year periods ago was that?! I could have groves of them by now!
