Where do you get your fish?

Right now I have a small system that has guppies in it and I'm working on building a larger system in my back yard. I was just wondering where everyone else has gone to buy fish.

Thanks,

Stephanie

  • I finally managed to get some fish after lots of procrastination on my part mostly.

I got mine from Brown's fish farm. They were great. Delivered to South Phoenix all the way from Pima. I did h ave to go through and get a pond stocking permit from the game and parks department but that wasn't as big of a deal as I thought it would be.

Here's their info if anyone else is interested:

    • What kind of fish did you get, Stephanie?

    • I bought about 20 bluegill. So far they're hanging out at the bottom of my pond. I'm hoping once it warms up they'll come to the top and i'll be able to see them more often.

    • You should. if I recall from my fishing excursions, they're pretty much top feeders. :)

  • There are a few places around, but you have to decide what kind you want. We're raising Nile Tilapia. There's also Blue, Mozambique, hybrids, etc. Make certain you get both males and females if you plan to breed. Some places only have males.

We sold some a little while ago and will sell more once these start breeding. The McClungs (GardenPool.org) sell Nile Tilapia sometimes. If you're nearing time, contact them now and get on their list. Also check Craigslist. Once in a while some pop up there. That's where we found most of ours. They tend not to breed in the winter because of the cold, so now that the weather is warming up, you should see more available.
