Omega 3 questionased

I have been feeding my Tilapia wild purslane that has sprung up thought my gardens. Does anyone know or point me in the right direction about if feeding the fish the purslane will raise the omega 3 content of the fish itself? I believe chicken eggs are enhanced that way through diet so I'm curious if this would be the same with the fish. I'm not fond of the fish varieties high in omega 3s so it would be awesome if the tilapia levels could be increased through diet. Thanks for any input.

  • Yeah fish in my milk doesn't sound right either.

Sheri, I had inquired with another source who did say feeding them the high omega 3 diet could improve their omega 3 content. I'm not sure how much or if its a worthwhile venture, but the purslane is free and abundant when its growing. I'll post again if I get any other information. Thanks for the replies.
    • It certainly can't hurt, and yes, purslane grows like...well...a weed! :) it grows very well in an aquaponics system, too, BTW.

Lisa, that just sounds so wrong! LOL!

  • The Fry's brand of organic whole milk has 'Omega 3 fortified' on the package and the added ingredients are topped with Tilapia.  It tastes OK, but the thought of "fish milk" eeked us out.  Not that packaging claims are a reliable source of information ;-)

  • Steve, I just came across this post. Have you learned anything about this?

My understanding is tilapia is not a good source for omega 3, but a great protein source. I'm afraid you might not have luck replacing salmon for tilapia. But, chickens eat bugs and other things which raise their eggs' omega-3 count, so you can eat them. And, if since purslane is full of omega 3, eat it in yourself. It's good in salads. :)
