New AP system at my place

Well, its mostly finished.  Those of you who have been to my place know I have an AP system in my front yard, based on a jacuzzi and a converted raised bed.  Its been working for about a year and a half.  So the new system is in the backyard, based on the 8x2 stock tank that I had for my micro livestock.  The water is very green, in part from the duck poop.  Since I am running a pump in there anyway, seemed like the perfect place to experiment.  It still needs more lava rock and an electrician to remove the neck height hanging extension cords, and plants.  I will be trying different plants to reduce the feed bill for the goats.  Have bamboo cuttings in, will try pre-sprouting barley and wheat seeds and growing them out in the bed.  Visitors are welcome.

  • Update:  It has taken some fiddling, but is working well now.  Simplified the water delivery to the beds and installed a pump filter.

  • Very nice!

  • This is awesome! I now regret giving away my stock tank. I was told that galvanized tanks were not conducive to aquaponics.

    • Daniel,

I painted 2 coats of fish safe paint on it first.

    • Please explain...fish safe paint?

    • This is the brand I used, can't remember which one, http://www.lifeguardpaint.com/?gclid=CMXKmKn5mbACFQOEhwodBWPRWw#Pon...  I wish I had done more research first, as it was very expensive and the company got bad ratings from others on the net  So far it seems to be holding up well and the 3 large goldfish look to be thriving.  If I need to do something like that again, I think I would use Drylock  http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3747515&... or paint on the outside (galvanized will rust through) and pond liner on the inside.  Try googling 'fish safe paint' There are other products out there, I just don't have any experience with them.

      Hope this helps,

      Lis

    • Daniel,

Tracking down brand names, answer soon.

  • We haven't met as of yet, but our youngest son, Collin, has been to your place. I would love to visit and see everything when it is convenient for you! We are in the very beginning stages of things (fruit trees, edible landscape, and chickens...and we would like to continue working towards other micro-livestock, as well as aqua-ponics).

    • Caren,

Did you get my note on your home page?
