My Lil Aquaponics Project.

Hi Everyone! My name is Chi. I don't live in AZ. I found this sitecruising the web when I stumbled on Rachel's post. It inspired me tomake my own system. I noticed a lot of systems are a lil um "3rd world"looking for the lack of a better term. This is v1.0 for me to get allthe plumbing squared away. It is made with a 200 gallon tote, 4" ABSpipe for the grow beds. 500 gph pump. Right now it is all running onhouse power but in the spring when the storms are over will switch tosolar. Also it will get some cedar paneling around it so it will be morepresentable. Fish will be a mix of tilapia and channel catfish. I thinkI might need to add a settling tank but i'll see how it goes.

Any suggestions to improve the system are welcome.

    Ya lettuce. My romaine lettuce is doin ok and so are my nasturtiums.

    It's been a lil over a month now. things are looking pretty good. The picture below is of broccoli. It's a lil leggy from I guess lack of nitrogen.

    I somehow missed all of these earlier posts, sorry!
    I got most of my fry from Dennis. If your temps are warm enough you can grow them out in about 6 months. This cool weather is really slowing down their growth. I've got mine covered in greenhouse plastic now, but I'm going to have to add a tank heater soon. I've also noticed a really big difference in size. Not just between the sexes but also between the stock which are different bloodlines. Like a fourfold difference in size.
    I had taken some pictures of my system but then my camera bit the dust and I lost all of those pictures. I'll update my blog (rachelstinyfarm.blogspot.com) with new pics of the system in a week or two when I get the new camera. I have the hole dug and the liner for the 500 gallon system, I'm waiting on the pump and the underlayment.

    So couple of weeks ago I planted some lettuce seedlings. I forgot to take pics of how small they were. Went to check on them today and took some pics.

    Hot and steamy in there. 47 degrees outside and 63 inside.

      Looking great! I'll have to get my greenhouse plastic up ASAP and hopefully take some pictures soon too.
      I'm really wanting to get my 500 gallon in-ground system started cycling in the next two weeks... that may be a pipe dream though!! ;)

      If you're in Phoenix, you can buy them from Dennis at www.gardenpool.org He has been doing aquaponic gardening for a while, and his tilapia fry have been grown organically in the same way.
