I have been told by several people that the lava cinders we have here in Arizona are ~7.3 and you can use them or mix them with 25% hydroton or expanded shale with good results. Just keep in mind price comparison, in most places lava rock is more costly than hydroton and so not many use it, but here in Arizona lava cinders are $50/ton :)

Rhiba farms uses it for their wheatgrass & sprouts, but not in the aquaponics system.
