We've had over two inches up herein NW Phoenix, and our 3 rainbarrels filled long ago - but I want to know how those glorious cisterns are doing. It's so exciting to think of all those gallons of water waiting there for you!

That rain on Wednesday Dec. 29th, filled up the 600 gallon cistern. Probably a bit overflowed into the basin. Got about .9" here in S. Scottsdale.
Saw snow flurries yesterday through Camelback Mountain! And little "snow" blobs here at the house. Not flakes but weird blobs that looked like styro foam bits.
I got 1 1/2 inches making 17 3/4 for the year. WOW is this really Desert - no.

We also got a dry snow here in NW Phoenix - like Ericka said, little weird blobs. none of it stuck, although I got to see little snowflakes on my arm and on my dog Greta's fur. Now that's excitement!
Hi this is my first post on forum i have been colleting rain water in 50 gal barrels I managed allmost 200 gal this time around. so cool to find folks who dont think I am totally nuts.

Yes welcome to you...and welcome to the Rain Nuts!
I have 16 1/4 inches so far this year and but a few days left. Get busy with the Earth Works...catch and store in the soil first ...then you can boast 1000's of gallons!

Don as of wensday I have caught nearly 400gal. I am at capacity. you are right if I get a good gutter system I could catch much much more.

Yes use the Guttering to direct the water to places you need it most, tree basins, orchards, and the like. have the barrel too but have it next to the big basin to have all the overflow go into the basin.
and use the guttering only across areas of impermable surfaces - concrete. hence the "redirect" practice into basins.
I filled a few barrels myself. I had 1" as of 6pm....I might make 18" this year !!! <smile>

Yes, welcome, Mark! It's amazing how much rain we can get here in the desert - one of the few places where folks rush outside when it rains!

Its so nice I here from folks with the attiude of rushing outside when its rainning. I know people come here fore the sun and I here a lot of whining when it rains. They think I am strange when I say they should be out dancing in it. I love the rain.
WOW, what a storm! Watching the news last night and many people got a whopper of rain and hail, HUGE hail for this part of the country! Here near downtown Scottsdale we got a bit over .5" so not as much as many other people did but still a good amount.
Our cistern was basically empty, so now it is half full, about 300 gallons. The cistern is sized for a one inch rain.
We did have a hands-on for the PDC students this past weekend to re-shape our front catchment earthworks, which filled up and worked really well! Ryan will be posting some shots of that later on when we get some time. Got to love Earthworks, a somewhat fail-safe method to storing rainwater!
