Although I'm a Phoenix native and remember gardening with flood irrigation as a kid, I've got a few questions. From what I can gather, the best way is to make sort of wide beds with furrows on either side. The idea is that the water pushes harmful salts towards the center of the mounds, leaving plants on the edges near the furrows safe. Does this make sense?
My main question has to do with the furrow size. After an arduous morning of digging the furrows out, (about a shovel deep) my lovely wife told me she thought the furrows were too deep, and the mounds too high. Any input on how this is supposed to work? I guess I assumed the veggies would get the water they need by the adjacent furrows, but now I wonder if it needs to flood over the top.
I guess time will tell. Irrigation is next weekend. But if anyone has some ideas, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks.
