I've just started reading this book by Novella Carpenter. It's a cute story of a woman who loves city life, its culture, crowds and energy, but just can't get push out her upbringing by two back-to-the-earth hippies. The story takes place (so far) in Oakland, California, and talks about how an apartment dweller can raise bees, chickens, ducks, geese, and turkeys along with "squatting" on the vacant lot next door for her vegetable garden. As she meets others in the community, she learns that there's a name for what she does, urban farming. Can't tell you how it ends as I've not gotten that far yet but still a delightful read. You can read more about it on amazon, http://www.amazon.com/Farm-City-Education-Urban-Farmer/dp/1594202214/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1255533471&sr=1-1
