    Arcadia's Edible Garden Tour
  • Hi Stephanie, Yes thats us. Ok, lets be friends! Love to see that you are busy working on your "homestead".
  • How are you guys doing with composting? Just curious if you ever started. Now is the time to get some fall/winter gardening in too!
  • PS see you at the composting class, sounds interesting. There is also a class on making bokashi about a month later. It is a type of propagation of microorganisms that make your soil healthier and organic, so it can use up the compost you put in it. I have been gardening for 35 years, but an very interested in going to a more natural/organic method to improve the quality of my produce. I also have a nice sprout garden in our kitchen which I grow sprouts of various types for soups/salads/ juice, and my wheatgrass for juice. Would love to know what you two are doing.
  • I too am a raw foodist. I read about it in Dr. Gabriel Cousens' book "There is a cure for diabetes" I have been at it for three months, and have lost the high blood sugar, high blood pressure, and over 50 pounds. I like juicing, wheatgrass, greens etc, and like a large variety of salads and blender soups. I have read about juicing by Dr. N. Walker, and sprouts by Dr. Ann Wigmore. I would love to learn more, and take suggestions well as to what to read and what to try eating! I will check out your blog. I started a forum/group called Raw Food Enthusiasts on the Phx permaculture guild website. Check it out some time. Jack
  • Hi, I will leave a bag for you in my front yard. I live at 1123 w. Orangewood Ave. It is just north of Glendale east of 7th ave. Google it for a map. I will leave it on the left side of the house. Just c'mon up and grab it if you want it. If not, no biggie. You can see my compost bins there too! You will probably recognize my house because I have 2 big piles of branches from a big one that fell last night.
  • I saw your reply on where to start my garden and checked your website. Thank you for your reply. Talk about inspiring! I was wondering where you get sprouts? My mother used to do that and I have looked for the last couple of weeks for the stuff to do this.

"YES!! I have!! My husband and I were moving a fish tank and underneath pops--no joke---a 5 inch long scorpion--tail furled ready to strike! My chicken eyeballs it and starts chasing it as I'm yelling, "no silly chicken get away--it stings!"--there…"

"I got chickens for this very reason! In fact, whenever I am doing yard work I have them running along side me. Just yesterday I was raking and unearthed 3 scorpions and my girls were right there to gobble them up. As far as dogs.... We do not have…"

"Definately some dogs will attack, but give them a chance. Basically we did what Bethanny suggested. I was paranoid for a while while I was out with the chickens and dogs I would not take my eyes of our dog Leona because she kills birds in the yard…"

"Like the others said, raising chickens and dogs together is a gamble. The number one thing to remember is to not trust the dogs at all unsupervised with the birds...I would say until you've gone at least 6 months without incident.

Not all chickens…"

"Our experience is similar to Jennifer's. My mother lives in our guest house, and her dog Keiko is a Shiba Inu. We have lost five Leghorns and an Easter Egger to him over the years, sometimes despite our wing-clipping efforts. He is very merciful -…"

"Hi Stephnie,
We raised our chicks in the house. We were very watchful with the dogs while the ladies were young. But they became used to each other as part of the family. We also watched them together at first when we put them outside, but now they…"

"The best thing to get rid of scorpions is a black light. They have them at Home Depot now that are just a little flashlight and they work great. Scorpions are nocturnal so the chickens usually have a hard time finding them all. A black light and a…"

"I have two large breed dogs and they both go CRAZY for birds and other creatures both on walks or just chasing them in the backyard. When I first got my chickens I only had one dog and I watched the birds very closely and introduced them to the dog.…"

I really want to help at the Urban Farm, but the email I sent you on Monday came back to me saying that delivery had been delayed. I am not sure what that means, but I am hoping to get in touch with you asap so that I can help out.
